The Jaipur Government Authority has built Hati Gau (Elephant Village) which houses 50 of the 125 female working elephants in Rajistan. Two more are planned as far as I know. The conditions are much better for the elephants and families, as well as having a large swimming area for the elephants. After the elephants come back from work, they cool off and eat. The mahouts first feed them long grass which has to be bundled to avoid waste. Later in the evening they are given chapatis.
